This guide explains what a CIN number is, how to read and find one and why checking a company’s CIN matters before you share personal details with any lender. It also covers how a CIN differs from a PAN, GSTIN and LLPIN
A CIN, or Corporate Identification Number, is a unique 21-character code that the Registrar of Companies (RoC) issues to every company incorporated in India under the Companies Act 2013. The CIN number full form is Corporate Identification Number. If you’ve searched for what is CIN number in company records, this is it. Every corporate identification number in India follows the same fixed pattern and stays with a company for life.
You’ll find it on the Certificate of Incorporation, on invoices and letterheads and in a website’s footer. Checking a company’s CIN on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) portal takes under a minute and it’s a smart habit before you share personal details with any lender.
QUICK STAT:
More than 17 lakh companies are currently active on the MCA register and every one carries its own CIN.

A CIN confirms a business exists as a legal entity, separate from the people who run it, letting it sign contracts, borrow money and be sued in its own name. Section 12(3) of the Companies Act 2013 makes it mandatory for every company to print its CIN, name, registered office address, phone number and email on all invoices, letters and notices. Skipping this is either careless or deliberately evasive and neither is reassuring.
Ravi, a small business owner in Nagpur, was offered a loan through an app he’d never heard of. Before sharing his Aadhaar and bank details, he looked up the CIN in the app’s terms and ran it through the MCA portal. The registered company name didn’t match the app’s branding and the address turned out to be a residential flat. He also checked the RBI’s list of registered NBFCs and found nothing, so he walked away.
PRO TIP
Quick check: go to mca.gov.in, open MCA Services, select View Company/LLP Master Data and paste in the CIN. Results load in seconds.
The requirement flows from the Companies Act 2013. Section 7 covers CIN allotment by the jurisdictional RoC office and Section 12(3) covers the duty to display it. Every private limited company, public limited company, One Person Company, Section 8 non-profit, government company and Nidhi company needs one. LLPs are the exception, since they’re registered under the LLP Act 2008 and get an LLPIN instead.
Wondering how to get a company CIN number yourself? You don’t apply separately. The RoC allots it automatically the moment your Certificate of Incorporation is issued.
WATCH OUT
Don’t confuse a CIN with an LLPIN, a PAN, a GSTIN or a director’s DIN, the Director Identification Number assigned to each individual director. Each serves a different regulatory purpose and none substitutes for another.
If you’ve wondered what a CIN number in company records looks like, here’s how to decode it. Take U72900MH2015PTC123456 as an example.
| Segment | Example | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Listing status | U | Unlisted (L would mean listed on a stock exchange) |
| Industry code | 72900 | RoC-assigned code for the company’s primary business activity |
| State code | MH | State of registration, Maharashtra in this example |
| Year of incorporation | 2015 | Year the RoC issued the Certificate of Incorporation |
| Ownership type | PTC | Private limited company (PLC = public, OPC = one person company) |
| Registration number | 123456 | Sequential number allotted by the RoC, unique to that entity |
DID YOU KNOW?
Priya took a personal loan through Fibe to fund her wedding. Before signing, she looked up the CIN and RBI registration of the lending partner named in her Key Fact Statement, which took a few extra minutes and gave her real peace of mind.
DID YOU KNOW?
Meera, a college student, checked a prospective employer’s CIN on the MCA portal before sharing her bank details for a stipend transfer and confirmed it matched the Section 8 non-profit named in her offer letter.
A valid CIN confirms legal registration and active status, nothing more. It says nothing about a company’s financial health or the quality of its service. Company secretaries often point out that for lending businesses specifically, a CIN alone isn’t enough. You should also check the RBI’s list of registered NBFCs, since lending requires a separate licence beyond basic incorporation. Reading the Key Fact Statement before signing any loan agreement adds a further layer of protection.
CIN stands for Corporate Identification Number, a 21-character code the RoC issues to every company incorporated under the Companies Act 2013.
Check the Certificate of Incorporation, the company’s invoices or letterhead, its website footer, or search by name on the MCA portal.
No. A CIN confirms incorporation and is issued by the RoC, while a PAN is issued by the Income Tax Department for tax purposes.
No, LLPs are registered under the LLP Act 2008 and get an LLPIN instead, a different 7-character code.
Not for a registered company. Section 12(3) makes CIN disclosure on invoices mandatory, so a missing CIN is worth asking about.
Verify the CIN on the MCA portal, then separately check the RBI’s list of registered NBFCs, since lending needs its own licence.
Treat it as a warning sign and pause before sharing any personal or financial information until it’s resolved.
The CIN stays fixed for life, though it can update if the RoC approves a name or ownership type change.
Its listing status, industry code, state of registration, year of incorporation, ownership type and RoC registration number, all in one 21-character code.
A CIN has 21 characters in total, a mix of letters and digits, not purely numeric digits.
Same as above: check its incorporation certificate, invoices, letterhead or the MCA portal’s Master Data section.
No. A CIN confirms company incorporation under the Companies Act, while a GSTIN is a 15-digit tax registration number issued separately by GST authorities.
