How to Update Aadhaar Card Online and Offline: A Step-by-Step Guide
Reviewed by: Fibe Research Team
- Updated on: 24 Jun 2026

This guide covers how to update Aadhaar card details online and offline including address updates, mobile number changes and Aadhaar card corrections. All update routes, current UIDAI fees (revised October 2025), required documents and tracking instructions are covered. Most demographic updates take 5 to 7 working days; mobile number changes can take up to 30 days.
Most people only think about how to update Aadhaar card when something breaks. A loan KYC fails. A bank OTP goes to a dead number. A subsidy stops reaching them. By that point, the delay has already cost them time or money. The smarter move is to update proactively before things go wrong. And honestly, for most of the updates, it takes a few minutes only.
Here’s everything you need to know: what you can change, which method to use, current fees, documents required and how to track your request.

What Details Can You Actually Change?
UIDAI splits updates into two buckets: online-friendly ones and offline-only ones.
| Update Type | Details | Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Demographic (Online ✅) | Name, Date of Birth, Gender, Address | myAadhaar portal or Seva Kendra |
| Document Upload (Online ✅) | Proof of Identity, Proof of Address | myAadhaar portal or Seva Kendra |
| Mobile Number / Email (Offline only ⚠️) | Registered mobile, Email ID | Aadhaar app (face auth) or Seva Kendra |
| Biometric (Offline only ⚠️) | Fingerprints, Iris Scan, Photograph | Aadhaar Seva Kendra only |
Shifted to a new flat? You can sort the address update from your phone tonight. But if your number has changed, you’ll need to either visit a centre or use the Aadhaar app with face authentication.
When Does It Actually Make Sense to Update?
The obvious triggers are life events whether it is a move, a name change, a new SIM. Those are straightforward.
Less obvious: UIDAI’s own regulations say Aadhaar holders should refresh their supporting documents at least once every 10 years from the date of enrolment. Not many people know this, but it keeps authentication accurate over time.
QUICK STAT
UIDAI’s Aadhaar database covers over 1.3 billion Indian residents – one of the largest biometric identity systems in the world. Outdated records are a leading cause of authentication failures that block access to subsidies, banking and credit. (Source: UIDAI, 2024)
For children, 2 mandatory biometric updates are required: between ages 5 and 7 (when fingerprints and iris scans are first captured) and again between 15 and 17. Both are currently free.
Let’s Understand This Better Where This Mattered
Priya, 28, moved from Bengaluru to Pune for work. She updated her address in Aadhaar card online the same week – uploaded her rental agreement, verified via OTP. Twenty minutes, done. When she applied for a personal loan that month, e-KYC cleared on the first attempt. No documents requested, no delays.
Rahul, 34, switched telecom operators and let his old number lapse. Took him two weeks to realise it was still linked to his Aadhaar – bank OTPs were going nowhere. He booked an appointment at his nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra, completed face authentication via the Aadhaar app and paid ₹75. Thirty days later, his mobile number was updated in the UIDAI database and everything worked again.
Ananya got married and needed her surname changed on Aadhaar. A mismatch between her Aadhaar, PAN and bank records had already caused one KYC rejection. She visited a Seva Kendra with her marriage certificate, submitted the Aadhaar card correction form and received a URN. The update came through in 14 days and her records matched everywhere.
How to Update Address in Aadhaar Card Online?
This is the most commonly done update and the simplest. You need a mobile number registered with your Aadhaar to log in – if that’s not in place, visit a Seva Kendra first.
- Open myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Only use the official UIDAI portal – third-party sites offering Aadhaar card update online services are not authorised.
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number. Get the OTP on your registered mobile and log in.
- Select ‘Update Demographics’ or ‘Update Aadhaar Online’ from the dashboard.
- Pick ‘Address’ as the field to update.
- Type the new address carefully. One spelling error can get the request rejected.
- Upload a scanned copy of your address proof. Check that the image is sharp and all text is legible – blurry uploads are the single most common rejection reason.
- Pay ₹25 online.
- Submit and save the Service Request Number (SRN) that appears on screen.
PRO TIP
For address proof, a utility bill, bank passbook or rent agreement works well. Utility bills must not be older than 3 months. Photograph the document in good natural light before uploading — clarity is everything.
How to Change Mobile Number in Aadhaar Card
This one surprises people. You cannot change your mobile number through the myAadhaar web portal – UIDAI requires biometric or face verification, which isn’t available on the website. Two routes:
Option A: Via the Aadhaar App (Face Authentication)
- Download the official Aadhaar app from Google Play or the App Store.
- Log in and go to the ‘Service’ section on the home screen.
- Select ‘Mobile Number Update’.
- Enter the new mobile number and complete face authentication.
- Pay ₹75. Collect your SRN for tracking.
Option B: Aadhaar Seva Kendra
- Book an appointment on uidai.gov.in under ‘My Aadhaar > Book Appointment’.
- Visit at your scheduled time with Aadhaar and an identity document.
- Fill the update form, selecting ‘Mobile Number’ as the change type.
- Complete biometric verification at the counter.
- Pay ₹75 and collect your acknowledgement slip with URN.
DID YOU KNOW?
Your old number is not needed to complete this update. Even if the previous SIM is deactivated or lost, the Seva Kendra verifies your identity through biometrics — so a disconnected number is never a blocker.
Mobile number changes take up to 30 days to reflect in the UIDAI database — longer than any other update type. Initiate this as early as possible.
Offline Update at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra
For biometric changes, name corrections or anything that cannot be done online, the Seva Kendra route is reliable.
- Find your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra on uidai.gov.in or the mAadhaar app.
- Carry original documents — the operator scans and returns them.
- Pick up the Aadhaar Update Form at the centre and fill it clearly.
- Submit form and documents to the counter operator.
- Provide biometrics if the update requires it.
- Pay the applicable fee.
- Collect your acknowledgement slip with the URN.
By Post
For residents without internet access or who cannot travel, postal correction is a genuine option. Download and print the Aadhaar Correction Form from uidai.gov.in. Fill it in, attach a self-attested copy of a supporting document and post to the nearest UIDAI regional office. Takes longer, but it works.

DigiLocker and Aadhaar – What You Should Know
If you access your Aadhaar through DigiLocker, there’s nothing extra to do after an update. DigiLocker pulls directly from the UIDAI database – once your Aadhaar card update online or offline is approved, the DigiLocker version refreshes automatically within a few days.
DID YOU KNOW?
DigiLocker is accepted as valid address and identity proof by banks, lenders and government portals. Sharing your DigiLocker-linked Aadhaar for KYC means the receiving party always gets your latest UIDAI-verified details – no manual re-upload ever needed.
How to Track Your Request
- Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and SRN (online updates) or URN (offline updates).
- The portal shows current status – under review, approved or rejected.
Rejected requests show the reason on the same screen. Fix the issue and resubmit.
Five Mistakes That Get Requests Rejected
- Using a non-UIDAI website. Only myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in is official for Aadhaar card update online. Any other site is unauthorised.
- Blurry document scans. The most common rejection reason. Always check readability before uploading.
- Expired documents. A utility bill from 6 months ago will not be accepted as address proof.
- Losing the SRN or URN. Screenshot it immediately – you’ll need it to track or resubmit.
- Skipping mobile number registration. Without a registered number, the online portal is inaccessible. Sort this at a Seva Kendra first.
Why Financial Access Depends on an Accurate Aadhaar
When Vikram, 31, applied for a personal loan in Hyderabad during a medical emergency, his Aadhaar still showed a Delhi address from three years prior. His registered mobile had been deactivated. Two e-KYC attempts failed in a row. The application sat stuck for days.
After updating both his address in Aadhaar card and mobile number at a Seva Kendra, he reapplied. e-KYC cleared immediately. The loan was disbursed the same day.
That’s the real cost of outdated Aadhaar details – not a bureaucratic inconvenience, but delayed access to money when you actually need it. Keeping your Aadhaar current takes an afternoon at most. It is worth doing before an emergency forces the issue.

FAQs On How to Update Aadhaar Card
1. How long does Aadhaar update take after submission?
For demographic changes – name, address in Aadhaar card or gender – done online, it typically takes 5 to 7 working days. Offline Aadhaar card corrections at a Seva Kendra take a similar duration. Mobile number updates can take up to 30 days. Track progress using your SRN or URN at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
2. Can I update my Aadhaar without a mobile number?
Not online – the myAadhaar portal requires OTP login via a registered mobile. Offline updates at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra work without any mobile number. To register a new mobile number, visit a Seva Kendra – your old number is not needed for this.
3. Is there a fee to update Aadhaar card details?
Yes. Online updates via myAadhaar cost ₹25. Offline updates at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra cost ₹75. Biometric updates cost ₹125. Mandatory biometric updates for children aged 5 to 17 are free until October 2026. New enrolment remains free.
4. Can I update my date of birth in my Aadhaar card?
Yes, but only once. UIDAI allows a single date of birth correction. Accepted documents include a birth certificate, passport or PAN card. No further changes are permitted after that unless UIDAI approves a special exception.
5. How to change mobile number in Aadhaar card without visiting a centre?
Use the official Aadhaar app. Log in, go to the Service section, select Mobile Number Update, enter the new number and complete face authentication. ₹75 fee applies. Expect up to 30 days for the change to take effect.
6. Can I update Aadhaar from home without visiting a centre?
For demographic and document updates, yes – the myAadhaar portal handles this entirely online. Biometric updates require a Seva Kendra visit. UIDAI’s Home Enrolment Service (Rs 700 for the first resident) is available for those who genuinely cannot travel.
7. How many times can I update my name on Aadhaar?
Twice. Beyond that, UIDAI requires special approval and legal documents – a gazette notification or court order.
8. What is the difference between an SRN and a URN?
SRN (Service Request Number) is issued for online myAadhaar updates. URN (Update Request Number) is issued for offline Seva Kendra updates. Both are used to track Aadhaar card correction status on the UIDAI portal.
9. My Aadhaar update was rejected – what should I do?
Check the rejection reason on the UIDAI portal using your SRN or URN. Most rejections are due to blurry documents, expired documents or mismatched information. Fix the flagged issue and resubmit.
10. Does updating Aadhaar also update my DigiLocker copy?
Yes. DigiLocker pulls directly from the UIDAI database. Once your Aadhaar card update online or offline is approved, the DigiLocker version refreshes automatically. No manual re-upload is needed.
